About this book
Countdown to Collapse is an evidence based account of the state of the UK ambulance services. Among other things the author exposes a gross shortage of resources, terrible staff morale, a call prioritisation system that is not fit for purpose, and an unsustainable year-on-year increase in demand - she argues that the combination of these factors are rapidly making the entire ambulance services unsustainable. Furthermore, the pressure to achieve targets has created a culture of deception whereby the quoted response time figures are little more than an illusion - the author details the lengths and deceptions ambulance services will go to in order to to appear to meet the response time targets. However, these disingenuous achievements do little more than hide the crisis and put lives at risk. Countdown to collapse is evidenced from real 999 calls, internal reports, photographs, freedom of information requests, insider knowledge, and staff surveys. Countdown to Collapse is so well researched, so concerning, and so enlightening that the Mail on Sunday devoted and entire double page spread all about the book.
